Part Five.
Edal Verra Kelal of the Nebri family of Nuran is elected as president in a quick election held in the opening weeks of 2388. His first official act as president was to reassign several Starfleet ships to be sent out to find new allies. With the Betazed Alliance becoming a threat due to their alliance with the Breen, he began to fear Starfleet would face further opposition and another was imminent. He made it clear that he was searching for new allies, new members, and would ensure the Federation was strong again.
In an unprecedented move, the Klingons give another blow to the Federation as they begin to capture and slaughter medical ships being sent to Romulan space. Romulan refugees taking resettlement on Federation worlds found themselves the victims of surprise attacks and slowly, the remains of the Empire began to turn to Donatra for help.
The MACO’s quickly responded to the situation, retaliating by taking out several Klingon outposts in Romulan space as well as engaging in battle at the new Klingon border. Caught in the crossfire, Donatra felt she had no choice but to side with the MACO’s to fight against the Klingons sending in her own fleet along with the Remans to fight the battle.
Losing a large portion of her fleet, Donatra surrenders after a few months, offering Khal the territory owned by the remains of the Empire in exchange for a non-aggression pact to be signed, vowing not to back anyone against them to protect her empire.
Throughout the second half of 2389, the Romulan Empire face their extinction as the Breen, the Gorn and the Klingons tear the remains of their worlds apart in order to gain control, with Andortella leaving the Federation for the Betazed Alliance who end up supplying weapons to the Gorn.
On the far side of Empire territory, the Federation finds some hope as the Kolar Alliance opens communication after centuries of closed borders and silence. With tensions rising in the space seperating their world, the Kolar opens it’s borders to Starfleet and offer themselves as the allies they’ve been searching for.
By 2390 a task force is assembled and sent to the Kolar to officially begin negotiations to maintain a permanent alliance after both Earth and Cardassia find themselves victims of surprise attacks from the Breen, sending a message that they are the dominant faction, that no one is safe from them.
Gaining more territory, the Klingons enslave a portion of the Romulan population. Using them as cannon fodder and referring to the area as ‘Klingon-Romulan Allied Territory’, they close their borders of their new land as they hold of the armies of the Betazed Alliace. Hoping to secure their lives and gain confidence over their new masters, the Romulan contingent of the Klingon Empire introduce the Klingons to their cloaked biogenic weapons plant, suggesting they eliminate the rest of the region and exterminate their enemies.
With the support of the Kolar, the Federation forced the Breen to retract from Cardassian space in 2391, but the war raged on all the way back to Earth. Paris was destroyed in one of their trademark surprise attacks, killing the President of the Federation.
With new weapons to play with, the Klingons begin random testing on unaligned planets not under anyones guard. While the Federation opposes the use of the weapons, they choose not to interfere until a new president is elected in fear of being their next target.
With Federation territory lost to the Betazed Alliance, Starfleet finds themselves cut off from their own command ad decides to build secondary command centres. Deep Space Nine becomes the command headquarters of the Bajor Sector and Starbase 128 becoming the home of the Archon sector. Starfleet Command establishes a unit to oversee all division operations as well as run a primary fleet, Federation Prime.
With three more worlds leaving the Federation, the Bajor sector becomes one of the most prominent, branching out their territory into the Gamma Quadrant and opening trade negotiations with the Dominion.
