Sha Ka Ree: The Epicentre
Officially it’s known as the Command and Control Complex, the name Epicentre came from a nickname that stuck in the years before Year One occurred.
The idea of the room is that of a small pen plan complex near the top of a command dome above the central core of the city. It has two main access points, one near the back on the upper level leading into other offices and a staff lounge while the other is opposite that on the lower level through a security lounge.
The central area of the Epicentre contains a command desk. It can display information but most would use their links hooked up to an extension stand (looking more like a laptop on the stand) to work away on.
Behind that is a central column with a large display which can be used for communications or readouts, but is mostly used to scan the news channels and keep on top of current events within the complex.
Each side of the column has a large console with massive readouts and displays overhead. On the right is the Operations Management system, while the left console watches over Mission Operations ongoing from SKR, which includes coordination of local fleet activity and civilian operations.
Up front are two large curved consoles. One monitoring communications and the other internal security. The outer side of the consoles have steps down to the ground level which contains an engineering overview console looking into the central area, while a pillar opposite the news feed stand behind it with various readouts displayed on ground level, and above that a view screen for communicating with external sources.
The Executive Officers office is located on the left side of that pillar, which is open with no doors and also leads into the security lounge, which the other side leads into a corridor to the security lounge with an access point to an internal-transporter system – which replaces the traditional turbolift within the city.
Above both the corridor and office access points there are further large tilted displays with communications information for the entire region.
Steps on each side of the command level lead to an upper deck. On the left is a large strategic operations display with regional activity displayed around a central desk. There is also corridor access to staff facilities with another transporter unit which also leads to a conference room behind the command level news feed.
On the right is a large console for monitoring the science departments and is used for any quick research needed on command level. On the far side of the console is an access point (again with no doors) leading to the CO’s office which also leads to the conference room.
The logic behind the Epicenter is to have all vital systems in the core of the room, with less essential or self contained areas around it. The XO has easy access into the control area and the captain, as well as the conference lounge. are cut off section within the open plan area for any private discussions.
