The Franchise

8 August, 2010 (09:00) | Background Info | By: James Tyler

Star Trek is an American science fiction entertainment series and media franchise. The Star Trek fictional multiverse created by Gene Roddenberry is the setting of six television series, including the original 1966 Star Trek, and eleven feature films. The franchise also includes dozens of computer and video games, hundreds of novels and instances of fan fiction, several fan-created video productions, as well as a themed attraction in Las Vegas. Beginning with the original TV series and continuing with the subsequent films and series, the franchise has created a cult phenomenon and has spawned many pop culture references

Well, that’s how it’s described on Wikipedia. But if you didn’t know what Star Trek was after all these years lets face facts, theres something wrong with you.

I first became aware of Star Trek as my father raised me on it. Seriously. You may have seen an “Everything I learned, I learned from Star Trek” poster at some point in your life. Sadly that was pretty much how I learned things. TV. And Star Trek hooked me. Either because I just liked it, or I was groomed to like it. Who knows…

Deep Space Nine remains my favourite of the bunch. Where the original crew had the right balance, The Next Generation sometimes seemed too serious and stuffy. I like personal stories and not a lot of personal things actually happened in that show. When DS9 came along I saw an aggressive captain, mouthy first officer, complete cock of a villian in Dukat… essentially everything seemed more personal and flawed.

When I was writing SKR I initially wrote it so it’d fit into the Star Trek universe or work in it’s own. The ST universe had so much background, but I had my own background. It was a conflict.

I kept going. In the back of my mind it was a Trek story and all the elements matched it. But when Star Trek 2009 information leaked through the Countdown comics and I found out the plot of that film… thats when I decided for sure to keep all ST elements and make this a Trek story.

For reasons I won’t say now – that movie, well the comic prequel, gave me a story element that worked to tie in all the universes (the original timeline, the new JJ timeline and my timeline with a bit of ST Online thrown in for good measure) and despite it being a bit fan wanky, I thought I’d keep the Trekness in. Besides I’m not making any money from this. I may as well do what the fuck I like with it.

I like the setting, the background, the morals and the opportunity of Star Trek storytelling. I’ve created my own little pocket of it and it logic and reason. I just hope at least one person can enjoy it.

Oh, and if anyone from CBS, Paramount or whoever the fudge owns the rights… read that bit about me not getting paid again.
